4 major biomedical principles:

Autonomy: generally meaning the patient has the ethical right to make decisions and act on them.  Autonomy is acting with intentionality, understanding, and without influence.   (Autonomy vs paternalism).

Non-Maleficence: Acting with the intention of doing no harm.  In medical care (or nursing care) it is the adage “first do no harm”.

Beneficence: Acting with the intention of doing good/helping

Justice: There are various theories of justice: Justice involves the equitable distribution of resources. and has several different arguments that can be used in decision making. These include: each individual is treated equally; each according to one’s means/needs, each according to merit or contribution, each according to what society needs.
