Discussion Prompt
COLLAPSE
Look through several major newspapers for articles that discuss care for the elderly in the community or care for those at the end stage of a life-threatening illness. Then answer the following questions:
A) What is the role of a community health nurse in assisting families in the care of the elderly in their homes?
B) What are some of the barriers related to the initiation of home care services in communities?
C) How does living in an urban area versus a rural area affect home care services?
Me:
The role of community health nurses is to provide treatments to their patients. They support family caregivers by caring for the sick and elderly community members in their own homes and help reduce the expenses of long-term care provided in health facilities. Community health nurses also train caregivers to provide expert care to their elderly members to live longer. They also teach caregivers about their health while caring for the sick. Community health nurses coordinate with the care providers in healthcare transition to promote and create awareness on health education (Srivarathan, Jensen & Kristiansen, 2019). Additionally, they held meetings with the community members to identify the necessary resources to support the aging population.
However, there exist various barriers that hinder the implementation of home-based care programs. They include the patent’s preference on whether to undergo treatment while at home or in the hospital. It is essential to respect the decision of the patient on where to receive treatment. Clinical concerns also hinder the initiation of home-based acre programs in that homecare visits take more time, and clinicians attend to a few patients, unlike in hospitals (Valizadeh, Zamanzadeh, Saber & Kianian, 2018). It is also associated with clinician’s safety since some areas are not secure. Infrastructural support hinders home-based care since some patients may require life-sustaining equipment, which is not accessible. Most home environments are not suitable for providing adequate care to patients. Patient safety also deters home-based care initiation because most of the patients and family caregivers lack clinical knowledge, which risks the patient’s health, worsening their conditions.
Living in urban areas is more advantageous than in rural areas regarding access to health care services. Home-based care services are more effective in urban areas than rural areas since most metropolitan areas have improved infrastructure and are more accessible. Thus it is comfortable to deliver clinical equipment in urban homes than rural homes (Gaffney et al., 2020). There are more health facilities in metropolitan areas than rural areas, which means more nurses and clinicians can provide expert care to patients in urban homes than in rural areas.
Professor question: You make good points! Culture is another barrier for initiation of home care services. Some cultures feel that we invade their privacy and the best person to take care of their loves one is family.
They also may use herbal medicine for the treatment of disease such as diabetes, HTN, or anxiety. Education is the key, but culture competency is important when it comes to handle ethical dilemmas. Is it right for a patient to treat HTN with herbs? Or is it right for the nurse to advise not to take herbs? How do you proceed with providing information/education?
