Our Week 5 lesson states ” The Institute of medicine reported gaps in education that can be addressed by making the core competencies of patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice (EBP), quality improvement, and informatics the curricular framework for all educational programs” (2018, p.66-67). Hence, the goal of Quality and safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) in meeting the task of preparing nurses who will have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously change to improve the quality and safety of healthcare within they work (QSEN, 2014). In using these tools as an assessment, QSEN coordinates findings and establish ongoing educational needs that address the needs of our organization to enhance outcomes in practice to promote safety and delivering quality care. Nurses and new graduates are required to comply with competencies in my organization. To ensure quality patient care we need to work as an interdisciplinary team, combining EBP in practice, implementing quality improvement, and utilizing informatics. The purpose of this is to have nurses capable of consistently improving the quality and safety within our organizations. In providing quality patient care this involves communication, respect, shared decision making and respecting their values and cultural beliefs.
In promoting a safe environment we have a huddle every morning at the beginning of shift and in the evening for night shift at this time we review color coded arm bands, code status, and at risk patients, sepsis alerts, invasive lines and tubes, hand washing, isolation, dialysis patients and bed alarms. This provides all of us with an extra safety measure for our patients, and also ensures that the primary nurse is not missing any pertinent information in their patient care.
Quality Improvement consists of: monitoring, assesses, and improves quality of care. For example:
Documentation of pain level is recorded along with the follow up after medication has been administered. Another quality improvement initiative is preventing pressure ulcer. Patients get assessed on admission for pressure sores, turn and repositioned every 2 hours as needed, providing at risk patients with air mattresses, and notify wound care coordinator if patient does have a pressure ulcer.
