In this project, we’ll be working with data from a bike share program. Bike sharing allows subscribers in an urban setting to rent bicycles for short trips from stations located throughout the city. Citi Bike is the largest bike sharing service in the United States, serving over 30,000 New York City residents per day.
In this project, you’ll be acting as a project manager for Citi Bike, working specifically on purchasing new bikes. Citi Bikes themselves are very sturdy and heavy, designed to withstand elements of nature, such as rain, snow, and wind. However, there is a downside. Older cyclists wishing to use Citi Bike often have a more difficult time riding the bikes. Citi Bike’s response to this is to order 500 new, lighter bicycles to be used by cyclists 50 and older. Unlike the normal Citi Bikes, the new bicycles are gender-specific.
You are given a data set profiling riders that are representative of the entire 50+ population of Citi Bike riders.
Based on the data, and the fact that Citi Bike needs to purchase 500 new gender-specific bicycles for its 50+ population, how many bicycles should Citi Bike buy for each gender?
Step 1: Get the data
· Download the provided .csv file and open it in Excel.
· Identify the gender column, column O.
· Review the values presented and ensure none are missing.
Step 2: Sort the data
· Use Excel’s sorting tool under the data tab.
· Sort by column gender, from A to Z.
· Women are coded as “w” and men as “m.”
· Create a table similar to the one below to the right of the data.

· Use either the row numbers or the count number at the bottom of Excel when you make a selection with your cursor to fill out the table.
Step 3: Graph the data
· Create a bar chart in cells to the right of the data with the x-axis labeled “gender” and the y-axis labeled “number of users” for each gender.
Note: In order to create this chart, you’ll need to sum the total number of male and female riders.
· Save your bar chart to your computer as an image file: right-click on the graph and select the “save picture as” option to export it as either a .gif or .png.
Step 4: Report the data
Create a new tab (or worksheet) in your workbook. Taking the following steps:
· Title it “Recommendation.”
· In cell A1 of your spreadsheet, write a short paragraph explaining the results of the graph and your recommendation. E.g: “Based on our data of users 50 and older, we should purchase…”
Your recommendation must contain answers the following questions:
1. How many bicycles should Citi Bike buy for each gender?
2. How did you determine the answer to question 1?
3. How did you use the analysis of the data to justify your answer to question 1?
4. What summary information does the bar chart provide to the viewer?
· Save your Excel workbook using the naming convention FirstInitial_LastName.Unit1project.xls
Step 5: Submission
Your submission should include the following elements:
· An image file of your bar chart.
· An Excel file with the data and recommendation.
Take the following steps to submit your work:
1. Create a folder on your OneDrive and name it MIS 304 Midterm.
2. Upload the image file of your bar chart and the Excel file to the OneDrive folder named MIS 304 Midterm
3. Get the link for sharing the folder MIS 304 Midterm
4. Post the shared link to Blackboard.
